Luis Barragán House

Tour

Luis Barragán was a Mexican architect and creator of the new school building in Latin America? (not clear what this references).

His ideas deeply influenced the architecture of contemporary Mexico and are reflected in global architecture. He led the movement to merge pre-Hispanic architecture with modern Mexican styles. His house is located in the Federal District of Mexico, in Tacubaya

Built in 1948, the house and workshop of the Luis Barragán in the suburbs of Mexico City represents an excellent example of the creative work of the architect in the years following the Second World War. The building is constructed of concrete and consists of a ground floor and two upper floors, as well as a small private garden.

Barragán's style blended traditional indigenous and modern artistic and architectural elements into a new synthesis, which has been enormously influential, especially in the contemporary design of gardens, squares and private landscapes. The house was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.

Some of Barragán's most representative works are:

  • Casa Gilardi (the his last work)
  • Hotel Camino Real
  • Satellite Towers
  • Capuchin Chapel

He was the only Latin American winner of the Pritzker Prize for architecture.

"It is essential to an architect to know how to see: I mean to see in such a way that the vision is not overpowered by rational analysis." Luis Barragán
